About Twilight Talks

Like every other aspect of human life, news and media creation and consumption have also undergone a metamorphosis in the last few weeks. Twilight Talks is a month-long series of 30-minute lectures starting May 6, 2020. It is organised by the Department of Media Studies, Christ (Deemed to be University) in association with the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru, to bring together diverse minds from various fields to share their ideas and experiences. The list of guests consists of people from academia as well as the industry to provide a well rounded understanding of where we are now and the way ahead from here. With the hope that we will overcome this crisis together, we bring to you ‘Twilight Talks’ that intends to stimulate collective action in our respective areas to come out of the twilight zone into a new, better, and a more just world.

Arun P R

Arun PR is a screenplay writer, dialogue writer and a director associated with the Malayalam film industry. He made his directorial debut in 2019 with the sports-drama Finals. He is the founder of the theatre group Fifth Estate, and has previously worked as a program manager at Radio Mango for 7 years. He holds a Master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Madurai Kamaraj University and a Master's degree in Marketing Management from Pondicherry University.

Dominic D'Souza

Dominic D’souza is a legal professional who has been part of the Indian Media Entertainment for over two decades. In addition to completing his studies in Law, he also has to his credit, a Masters Degree in Mass Communication and Journalism. He has been a part of major Indian media companies such as Zee TV, UTV, Balaji Telefilms and Shemaroo Videos (all companies listed on the National Stock Exchange) as also with international media companies such as The Walt Disney and Star India Pvt Ltd. He is presently employed as Vice President, Legal Regulatory with the Hinduja Ventures (a company listed on the National Stock Exchange and one that has substantial stake in the media).

Umesh Arya

Prof. Umesh Arya is Life Coach, Healer and Corporate Trainer, Media Teacher. He is also chairman, department of mass communication in Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar for the last 21 years and has 40 publications in national and international journals. He is a Google certified power searcher and specialises in “ICT applications in communication studies”. He also specializes in Social Media Data Analysis. He has delivered more than 1500 Lectures on various topics ranging from technological applications, to Neuro Linguistic Programming and his Ph.D. findings are published on the website of United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN).

Prof. Arya has copyrighted one term - "TecVac" (Technology Vacation). He aspires to leverage the online education methodology with his own channel on youtube which has more than 200 videos on soft skills and hard skills. He has developed lot of e-manuals for the teachers on these topics. He has done more than 30 online courses from international universities and has specialisation in skill development. Prof. Arya has delivered lectures on the EDUSAT on “Information Overload”, “Meta-literacy”, “Effective searching techniques”, “Google power searching techniques”, Waste reduction in learning etc.

Prof. Arya has served as Deputy Director of Academic Staff College in his university for two years. He has visited a few countries (US, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium) for his academic pursuits. Prof. Arya is a certified Yoga and Meditation teacher of the Art of Living. He is a certified therapist for many psychological ailments like phobia, anxiety, OCD etc. He is a certified hypnotherapist and past life regression therapist. He is a certified NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) communication coach. He has treated thousands of people affected by the mental health issues. He is a corporate trainer and is on the panel of many Blue chip companies like Jindal Stainless Steel, HCL, Kocreate Technologies, Wipro etc. Prof. Arya has invented and patented ECA therapy - (Emo Cardi - Ation - this therapy allows people to create the enabling circumstances for their careers, health, relationships, finances etc. Prof. Arya is also a Google certified “Fact Checker and Data Verifier”. His main passion is to coach people explore the quantum possibilities inside them.


K. G. Suresh

Prof K G Suresh, Director General at Indian Institute of Mass Communication is known for giving a major push to Indian language journalism at the prestigious institute by introducing Marathi and Malayalam Journalism at its Amravati, Maharashtra, and Kottayam, Kerala, campuses respectively. He has also worked as Senior Consulting Editor with Doordarshan News. Mr Suresh played a pivotal role in introducing innovative programmes including Speed News, Vaartavali- The world’s first Sanskrit Television News Magazine. Serving Press Trust of India in different capacities for over a decade, he has travelled across India and the world to cover developments including the Royal Palace Massacre in Nepal, BJP leader L K Advani's controversial visit to Pakistan, the post Taliban situation in Afghanistan, the cyclone, earthquake and violence in Gujarat, militancy in Kashmir apart from Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections.

Mrinal Chatterjee

Journalist-turned-media academician, Mrinal Chatterjee (born-1961) is a complete media person who has worked in all media forms with élan. He did his Masters in Mass Communication, Public Administration and English; and PhD from Berhampur University in 2007. He received two weeks trainer's training on ‘Conflict Reporting’ by Thomson Foundation in Cardiff, Wales at Cardiff, Belfast and London in 2006. He started his career as a Lecturer in English in 1983, joined Sambad, an Odia daily in 1984 as sub-editor and became Edition-in-Charge of its North Odisha edition in December 1996. He joined Eastern India campus of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanl as Associate Professor in February 1999 and became Professor and Head in June 2008.

Dr. Chatterjee has published seven books on Journalism and Mass Communication in English and Odia including his seminal work History of Journalism in Odisha. He has published over two dozens of book chapters, papers and articles in national and international journals. Recently he has co-edited (with Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey) an anthology of essays and papers titled Media, Democracy and Development and (with Snehasis Sur) an anthology of essays and lectures titled Mahatma Gandhi: A Journalist and Editor. He writes columns in English and Odia. An accomplished fiction writer, he has published seven novels and six short story collections, many of them translated in other languages.

Keya Acharya

An independent journalist and researcher, Keya Acharya is the President of the Forum of Environmental Journalists in India (FEJI). She has 25 years of experience in writing on environmental and developmental issues. In collaboration with the IFEJ, she has conducted and organised several media training events. She has travelled across the world for her assignments and has been widely published in Indian and International publications. She has authored a media handbook on water as well as contributed in two other handbooks. Keya is co-editor of The Green Pen: Environmental Journalism in India and South Asian Regions.

Vasuki Belavadi

Vasuki Belavadi is the author of Video Production (Oxford University Press, 2008), the first to be published in India, along with being a Faculty Fellow, UNESCO Chair on Community Media at the University of Hyderabad. He graduated with MA (Communication) in 1993 and completed his Ph.D. from University of Hyderabad in 2016. With extensive experience of over 11 years in various sectors including Print, TV and NGO sectors in various capacities like City Reporter, Correspondent, Sub-editor and more, he has also taught at Manipal Institute of Communication and Tezpur University. He is considered an authority on subjects like video production and radio programming and production.

Ravi Kumar Dhulipalia

Ravi Dhulipala, a renowned anchor and journalist from Hyderabad, Telangana has an experience in varied fields related to media. Currently a freelancer, Mr Ravi is known for hosting shows, conducting workshops and training for corporate and commercial events. His experience in journalism extends to being a senior host and news editor of India Ahead news, Managing editor of R K Media and an output head of NEWS9 channel. He is also known for being a radio host at Oye FM.

Bhargav Roy, Technical Director at Doordarshan, India, is a Senior Engineer with over 32 years of experience in the Television Broadcast Industry with cross-functional skills in TV Studio Maintenance, news-room automation, TV production, post-production, transmission, satellite up-linking, non-linear editing, computer animation and graphics creation. He has been the system administrator of all Win NT and Win2k based servers and computers being used in the DD Studios. He also has extensive experience in live O.B. coverage of international sporting events as vision mixing engineer,video engineer, slow motion and CG operation.

Arun Bose

Arun Bose, is a writer-director from Kerala, now runs his own film production company named Cockroach in Cocktail Productions. His personal interests are in travelling and making films. He was a part of National Folklore Support Centre, Chennai, making documentary films and conceptualising community digital archives to preserve indigenous knowledge at various tribal hamlets in the States of Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He has also made academic documentary films on some unique festivals practiced by villages in and around the cultural region, Kanchipuram, for OSLO University, Norway. Some of his prestigious awards and recognitions include the prize winning documentary film ‘Pedna Kalamkari’ on Kalamkari saree-making process from the village, Pedana, by the Craft Council of India in 2014. The one-minute film titled ‘My Paper Boat’ won the first prize at the United Nations Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in 2010. His short-film about a busker from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, was screened at the prestigious Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. A versatile artist, he is also involved in making corporate and advertisement films, scripting, direction, and editing. His academic qualifications include an MA in Communication from Madras Christian College and another MA in Film Studies from Northumbria University, UK. He is a visiting film lecturer at various institutions and also conducts film workshops. He has two feature films to his credit; an independent film titled Alaiyin Thisai (2019, Tamil) and his debut mainstream film, Luca (2019, Malayalam) which rose to a super hit early 2019.

An illustrious critic, film theorist, and author, N Manu Chakravarthy is a professor at the National College, Basavanagudi, and at Bangalore Central University, Bengaluru. Having made valuable contributions to the world of literary and cultural criticism in English and Kannada, he has authored numerous articles on literature, music, feminism, politics, and cinema. “Re/Viewing Iranian Cinema”, “Imaging the Oppressed”, ”Of Icons and the Spirit of the Times”, “The Marginalised as the Invisible”, “Lensing the Middle-Class Spirit” are some of his conceptual writings on cinema. He won the National Film Award for Best Critic for the year 2011.

Dr. Tan Ee Lyn

Dr. Tan Ee Lyn is a senior correspondent at The Strait Times, and has also written for Reuters and Caixin Global. She is an alumnus of the National University of Singapore, and taught there in the Communications and New Media Department. She was a Leading Correspondent in Asia during major crises, including H5N1 bird flu epidemic, SARS in 2003 and the pandemic H1N1 swine flu of 2009, and Japan’s nuclear crisis in 2011. She also won the Asian Human Rights Press Award in 2009 for her story on maternal mortality in Afghanistan in 2008. She has also reported stories for current affairs, energy, politics, social issues and economy beats.

Tangella Madhavi

Tangella Madhavi is an independent filmmaker who has a career spanning over 17 years. She is an assistant professor at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and an award winning documentary filmmaker. Her filmography explores different aspects ranging from slum culture to struggles of students and plight of old people. She is also specialized in canine counseling for deaf dogs. She is a proud recipient of SARAI fellowship and is known for her screenplays of national and international documentaries.
